Explore Africa Tours and Safaris ![]() South Africa welomes you! | The Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre - De Wildt North West Province South Africa Tours & Prices 2011 1 hour drive from OR Tambo Airport. Non Malaria area See key map (I 6). Situated in North West Province. The De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre is a CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) approved breeding park and collaborates with the University of Pretoria's Veterinary Faculty, the Mammal Research Institute, the Agricultural Research Council and the Department of Environment and Tourism. De Wildt Cheetah Centre was established in 1971 with the aim of breeding endangered species. Over the past two decades the center’s efforts have resulted in the major achievement of breeding what was once a threatened species, the cheetah. Over the years, nearly 600 cheetah cubs have been born at De Wildt - a dramatic contrast to the days when the cheetah population of South Africa was estimated at a mere 700. The De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary is a few miles from Johannesburg, that can be visited during a one day stop-over from London on your way to Botswana. The De Wildt Cheetah sanctuary is an excellent place to get up close to Cheetah and Wild Dogs, but also has a number of other really interesting animals to see including Honey Badgers, Wild Cats and Caracals. The centre specialises in breeding some of these rare mammals and in promoting awareness of the importance of conservation. De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre has received international recognition for bringing the cheetah back from the edge of extinction and it was largely due to their efforts that the cheetah was removed from the endangered species list in 1986. The De Wildt Cheetah centre is also the first to breed the rare king cheetah - originally thought to be a separate species although in reality it is genetically identical to the true cheetah. It has also bred and released captive-born wild dogs back into the wild. Ann van Dyk received a gold medal award form the South African Nature Foundation for her contribution in 1988.
